Wavefield

A stereo parallel bandpass filter bank for iOS with animated per-band gains. Shape sound with procedural motion, draw your own spectral curves, or let incoming audio drive the filters. Wavefield runs as an AUv3 effect or a standalone app.

Quick Start

  1. Open Wavefield standalone, or add it as an AUv3 effect in a host such as AUM, GarageBand, or Cubasis.
  2. Send audio through the effect and choose a Generator type.
  3. Set Bands and Depth to establish the spectral shape.
  4. Adjust Rate, Sync, and Direction to control the movement.
  5. Blend the result with Wet/Dry, then set Output and Drive.
Tip: Lower band counts create isolated resonances; higher counts produce dense spectral washes.

Core Controls

Bands
Choose 8, 16, 24, or 32 parallel filters
Depth / Q
Set motion intensity and filter resonance
Rate / Sync
Run freely in Hz or lock movement to tempo
Direction
Move left, right, or ping-pong across the spectrum
Spread
Offset right-channel motion for stereo width
Freeze
Hold the current motion and audible gains

Nine Motion Generators

Ripple
Fluid interference waves with seeded turbulence
Comb
Repeating spectral teeth with independently wandering groups
Terrain
Multi-scale cyclic spectral landscapes
Orbit
Sparse spotlights on counter-rotating paths
Cascade
A directional travelling spectral conveyor
Chord
Pitch-correct harmonic clusters across the frequency axis
Drift
Correlated random motion with controllable inertia
Sculpt
An eight-point manual curve with scenes and chain playback
Reactive
Input-following gain changes with threshold and envelope controls

Sculpt Your Own Field

  • Drag the Motion display to draw an eight-point spectral curve.
  • Apply ready-made shapes including tilt, smile, band emphasis, and band reject.
  • Pin points so they stay fixed while applying shapes or recalling scenes.
  • Capture up to 16 curve scenes and arrange up to 64 steps in a tempo-driven chain.
  • Morph between steps with Hold, Linear, or Smooth easing.

Reactive Filtering

  • Reactive mode follows incoming spectral energy instead of a procedural map.
  • Threshold sets when each band starts responding.
  • Negative Amount attenuates active bands; positive Amount emphasizes them.
  • Attack and Release shape how quickly the response moves and returns.
  • Linked stereo detection keeps left and right channels coherent.

Common Questions

  • No effect: Confirm audio is routed through Wavefield, raise Wet/Dry and Depth, and check that the active bands are not muted.
  • The motion is too subtle: Raise Depth or Q, choose fewer bands, or increase the filtered Wet/Dry level.
  • The sweep will not move: Turn off Freeze. In sync mode, also confirm that the host transport is running.
  • Sculpt is not animated: Sculpt is intentionally static. Build a scene chain when you want timed curve changes.
  • Reactive is silent without input: Reactive responds to incoming audio and does not generate a free-running motion field.
